Calculate pavers, base and bedding sand separately

A patio estimate has at least three separate quantities: surface pavers, aggregate base and bedding material. One combined “patio volume” cannot tell you how much of each product to order.

Start with the measured footprint

Measure each non-overlapping section and subtract areas that will remain uncovered. For a 10 × 10 ft rectangle, the surface area is 100 sq ft. If the specified base extends beyond the paving, measure that wider footprint separately rather than reusing the surface area.

Layer depths depend on the selected system, traffic, soil and drainage. The following depths are arithmetic examples only; use the actual installation specification for your project.

Count surface pavers with joints included once

Divide the surface area by the repeating paver module. A nominal 12 × 12 inch module covers 1 sq ft, so 100 sq ft needs 100 modules before allowance. An illustrative 10% layout allowance gives 110 units before rounding to the supplier’s package size.

When using actual paver dimensions, enter joint width separately. If the dimensions are nominal and already include a joint, do not add it again. Mixed-size patterns need the manufacturer’s pattern coverage rather than one average paver size. Use the paver calculator to estimate a single repeating unit and whole packages.

Calculate the aggregate base as its own layer

For a geometric example of 100 sq ft at 4 inches, volume is 100 × 4 ÷ 324 = 1.23457 cu yd. This is space in the specified layer, not automatically the loose quantity delivered by a truck.

Ask the supplier how the installed or compacted volume relates to the ordered product. If buying by weight, use a verified density for that material state. The allowance field in the paver base calculator is a purchasing margin, not a compaction test.

Calculate bedding sand separately

At an illustrative 1-inch bedding depth over 100 sq ft, volume is 8.3333 cu ft or 0.30864 cu yd before allowance. At 0.5 cu ft per bag, that requires 17 whole bags. With a chosen 10% allowance, the unrounded volume is 9.1667 cu ft and the count becomes 19 bags.

Use the paver sand calculator and the specified bedding material. Do not replace an aggregate-base depth with a sand depth or assume that every paving system uses the same bedding specification.

Bedding sand is not polymeric jointing sand

Bedding occupies a layer beneath the pavers. Jointing material fills spaces between them and depends on joint width, joint depth, paver pattern and the product’s coverage guidance. A bedding-sand calculation cannot provide a reliable polymeric-sand bag count.

Use the jointing product manufacturer’s method for the actual pattern and joint dimensions. Edging, drainage, geotextile and other system components may also need separate quantities.

Turn the three estimates into an order

Keep one line for pavers and packages, one for aggregate base and one for bedding. Record the area, depth, allowance, density and quote units with each line. Confirm minimum loads and whether delivery is charged per material or per trip.

For metric work, area in m² multiplied by depth in centimeters divided by 100 gives m³. Multiply by 1,000 for litres when comparing bags. The same separation of layers applies in either measurement system.
