    How to use this gravel calculator

    Separate the surface gravel from any compacted base course. Calculate different layers individually because their depths and products may differ.

    Confirm the grading, delivery increment and whether the quoted density describes loose or compacted material.

    Volume = net area × depth × (1 + extra ÷ 100). Weight = volume × supplier density.

    Gravel planning questions

    How do I calculate gravel for a driveway?

    Measure each driveway section and multiply its area by the depth of that layer. In US units, square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324 gives cubic yards. Calculate the base course and surface gravel separately when they use different materials or depths.

    Can I convert gravel yards to tons?

    Yes, with the bulk density of the specific gravel. Multiply cubic yards by pounds per cubic yard, then divide by 2,000 for US short tons. Enter that density in the optional field; the calculator leaves weight blank rather than assuming that every gravel weighs the same.

    How much area does one cubic yard of gravel cover?

    One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. At a uniform 3-inch depth it covers 108 square feet; at 2 inches it covers 162 square feet. Divide 324 by the depth in inches for square-foot coverage per cubic yard. These are geometric values before allowance, not a recommended installation depth.
