    Specify the stone size and whether fines are acceptable. A drainage layer and a compacted base often need different products.

    Keep loose-delivery quantities distinct from finished compacted dimensions. Ask the supplier for a project-specific conversion or ordering margin.

    Crushed stone planning questions

    Does 3/4-inch crushed stone mean a 3/4-inch layer?

    No. The stone size describes the product, while layer depth describes the thickness of the installed material. Enter the required layer depth in the calculator and use density or coverage information for that specific stone grading.

    How do I calculate crushed stone in tons?

    First calculate the layer volume. Supply the product density in lb per cubic yard for US units or kg per cubic meter for metric units. A loose delivery and a compacted layer can have different density; confirm the conversion with the supplier rather than assuming a universal factor.

    How do I compare bagged and bulk crushed stone prices?

    Use the same required material volume for both quotes. Bag pricing rounds up to complete bags; bulk pricing uses cubic yards or cubic meters plus the delivery charge you enter. If the supplier quotes per ton, convert the price to the calculator’s volume unit using the verified product density first. Confirm minimum orders separately.
