    How to use this asphalt tonnage calculator

    Enter your supplier’s density to convert volume into weight. A US short ton is 2,000 lb; a metric tonne is 1,000 kg.

    Use density and dimensions that describe the same material state. A loose mix density cannot be substituted for compacted density without checking the conversion.

    Volume = net area × depth × (1 + extra ÷ 100). Weight = volume × supplier density.

    Asphalt tonnage planning questions

    What is the asphalt tonnage formula?

    In US units, tons = area in sq ft × depth in inches ÷ 324 × density in lb per cubic yard ÷ 2,000. In metric units, tonnes = area in m² × depth in meters × density in kg per m³ ÷ 1,000. Apply a chosen allowance separately.

    Why is the asphalt tonnage result blank?

    A weight estimate requires supplier density. Without it, the tool can calculate volume but cannot determine tons. Confirm whether the density describes compacted or loose material and whether the order uses US short tons or metric tonnes.

    Can I convert square feet of asphalt directly to tons?

    Square feet alone describe area. You also need thickness and density. As a unit example, 1,000 sq ft at 2 inches occupies 6.17284 cubic yards. At an illustrative density of 3,600 lb/cu yd, that is about 11.111 US short tons before allowance. Neither the thickness nor density is a project specification.
