    How to use this grass seed calculator

    Use the rate for the task: new establishment and overseeding can differ substantially. The starting rate is an example, not a species recommendation.

    Subtract paths and planting beds. The calculated seed weight is separate from spreader calibration and the package sizes available to buy.

    Seed (lb) = net area (sq ft) × label rate (lb per 1,000 sq ft) ÷ 1,000.

    Grass seed planning questions

    How much seed do I need for a new lawn or overseeding?

    Use the rate for the task on the seed label. In US units, area in square feet × pounds per 1,000 sq ft ÷ 1,000 gives pounds of seed. The same lawn can require different amounts for establishment and overseeding.

    Can I calculate grass seed per acre?

    One acre is 43,560 sq ft. At an example rate of 5 lb per 1,000 sq ft, one acre requires 217.8 lb. That is an arithmetic example, not a recommendation for Bermuda grass or any other species. Use the appropriate product and regional rate.

    Can I work out grass seed from the coverage on the bag?

    Yes. Divide the bag weight by its labeled coverage to find a rate. A 20 lb bag covering 5,000 square feet implies 4 lb per 1,000 square feet. For a 2,500-square-foot lawn that is 10 lb. Use the coverage for new seeding or overseeding as applicable, since the two label rates can differ.
